There is still no consensus among Shariah Scholars on the Shariah compliance of cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin). Most of the Scholars, including those on TASIS Shariah Board, have serious concerns on the permissibility of this type of currency. This is due to the reason that this type of currency is neither a natural currency nor a currency created by regulation but an intangible asset which involves very high risk (Gharar). Hence, as per TASIS Shariah Board, it should be considered Shariah Non-Compliant till it gets a universal legal recognition and there is transparency in its operations.
